Few names in watchmaking carry the recognition, heritage, and prestige of Rolex. For more than a century, the brand has helped define what a luxury wristwatch can be—combining technical innovation with designs that have become unmistakable around the world.
At Carbon Watch Company, we appreciate Rolex not only for its iconic status, but for the history and craftsmanship behind every timepiece.
Where the Rolex Story Began
The Rolex story begins in 1905, when 24-year-old Hans Wilsdorf founded a watch distribution company in London. At a time when pocket watches dominated, Wilsdorf believed the wristwatch could become both elegant and genuinely reliable.
In 1908, he registered the name Rolex, choosing a short, memorable name that could be easily pronounced in different languages. Just two years later, a Rolex became the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision from the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne. In 1914, a Rolex wristwatch earned a Class “A” precision certificate from Britain’s Kew Observatory—an important validation of Wilsdorf's pursuit of accuracy. Rolex later moved its operations to Geneva, with Montres Rolex S.A. registered there in 1920.
The Oyster Changes Watchmaking
One of the most important moments in Rolex history arrived in 1926 with the introduction of the Rolex Oyster, a waterproof and dustproof wristwatch with a hermetically sealed case.
It was a milestone not only in watchmaking, but also in luxury marketing: Rolex understood that exceptional watches should prove their capabilities in the real world.
The Birth of the Perpetual Movement
Rolex continued its technical evolution in 1931, introducing and patenting its self-winding system with a Perpetual rotor.
Together, Oyster and Perpetual would become two of the most important words in the Rolex vocabulary.
The Datejust: A New Luxury Icon
In 1945, Rolex introduced another milestone: the Datejust.
It was the first self-winding wrist chronometer to display the date through a window on the dial. Its distinctive combination of functionality and elegant design—including its specially created Jubilee bracelet—helped establish the Datejust as one of the pillars of the Oyster Perpetual collection.
The Era of the Professional Rolex
During the 1950s, Rolex began creating specialized watches for professionals operating in demanding environments—from divers and pilots to explorers and scientists.
Several models from this period would become legends:
Explorer — 1953
Created following the historic first ascent of Mount Everest, the Explorer embodied Rolex's growing connection with exploration.
Submariner — 1953
Designed for diving, the original Submariner was waterproof to 100 meters and incorporated a rotating bezel that allowed divers to track immersion time.
GMT-Master — 1955
Created for the emerging age of international air travel, the GMT-Master allowed its wearer to track time across different locations and became associated with Pan American World Airways.
Rolex continued expanding its now-famous lineup with the Day-Date in 1956, Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, Sea-Dweller in 1967, Explorer II in 1971, and GMT-Master II in 1982, among many other milestones.
From Precision Instrument to Global Luxury Icon
What makes Rolex remarkable is its ability to occupy two worlds simultaneously.
These watches were developed as serious instruments for diving, aviation, exploration, racing, and other demanding environments. Yet models such as the Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master, Datejust, Day-Date, and Explorer have transcended their original purposes to become some of the most recognizable luxury watches ever created.
